Within Charles River, there are four levels for Clinical Veterinarians: Clinical Veterinarian I, Clinical Veterinarian II, Clinical Veterinarian III and Senior Clinical Veterinarian – giving our veterinarians the opportunity to advance their careers. Clinical Veterinarians focus on the clinical care of animals within the business area. Their responsibilities include routine examinations to assess animal health and identify study effects on animals. They also support regulatory programs by reviewing study protocols, training materials, standard operating procedures, and managing data collection for facility and husbandry procedures. They become adept at interpreting and applying animal welfare regulations in daily activities, take on greater decision-making responsibilities, and enhance their communication with customers and staff across CRL sites.

NHP Veterinarians specializing in the nonhuman primate importation business focus on the medicine and behavior of nonhuman primates. Their role encompasses staff training on animal care and use procedures, oversight of breeding sources, development of preventative medical programs, routine physical examinations, behavioral case management, and clinical care for health issues. Primarily, a nonhuman primate import veterinarian is a clinician and behaviorist with few administrative responsibilities compared to other business areas.

Principal Veterinarians are highly experienced leads in their specialized fields. They bring significant expertise and often contribute to scientific presentations and publications. While Principal Veterinarians and Scientists may still engage in clinical duties, their primary focus is on thought leads, oversight, decision-making, and cross-departmental responsibilities within or across CRL sites. These roles often include management responsibilities.

Staff Veterinarians are responsible for ensuring the health and welfare of research animals. Their duties include providing veterinary medical care, overseeing animal care and use programs for regulatory compliance, performing surgeries and technical procedures, training research staff on proper animal handling, reviewing research protocols, and developing enrichment programs for animal well-being. They collaborate with researchers to support scientific studies while maintaining high standards of animal welfare.

Staff Ophthalmologist is a vital member of the study team. They conduct direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, as well as slit lamp microscopy, to ensure the animals are healthy for study participation and to evaluate drug effects post-dosing. They also perform advanced dosing and diagnostic techniques, such as subretinal, intravitreal, suprachoroidal, and intracameral injections, as well as aqueous humor collection. Their expertise extends to conducting electroretinograms, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, optical coherence tomography, RetCam imaging, and fluorescein angiography.

Their guidance is essential for evaluating ophthalmic test articles and identifying ophthalmic side effects of systemic test articles.

Veterinarians with specialty training in Anatomic Pathology. Their responsibilities include independent routine microscopic evaluation of tissues to identify study effects on animals. They support regulatory programs by preparing reports delineating pathological findings, assisting with necropsy supervision, and interacting with sponsors.

Veterinarians with a Director title primarily manage people and programs. While they may still handle clinical duties and have specialized expertise, their main focus is on management. Their responsibilities include hiring and performance management of staff, overseeing key business processes at their site or across multiple sites, preparing and managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with research, animal welfare, safety, and other regulations. They also represent the company to customers and external bodies.
