The purpose of this lab-based role is to provide expertise in structural biology and biophysics for client programmes .The role is within a team responsible for the sub-disciplines :molecular biology, protein expression, protein purification, crystallisation, X-ray crystallography, Surface plasmin resonance, Nuclear Magnetic resonance, Isothermal Titration calorimetry

The job role is also a learning and development opportunity regarding the drug discovery process.


Main Tasks


  • Perform duties such as designing and cloning , expressing and purifying  mg quantities of proteins for biophysical analysis and an expectation that the analysis with at least one of the biophysical techniques can be performed, with minimal supervision on one or more targets.
  • Interrogate data generated for the project and use these data to achieve the project goals.
  • Present own work confidently, contextualising  structural biology and biophysical data internally and to the client.
  • Complete lab book to department and patent-acceptable standard.
  • Highlight interesting biological papers.
  • Use appropriate scientific literature to design required assays.
  • Maintain a strong awareness of the relevant scientific literature and contemporary laboratory practices.
  • Attend appropriate training sessions identified with support of line manager.
  • To operate in a safe manner at all times and to comply with CRL site-based guidelines.





  • Degree or Masters in Biology related discipline is essential.



  • PhD in Structural Biology.
  • Additional research experience post PhD
  • Experience in working in an industrial setting Biotechnology/pharmaceutical R&D environment preferred

  • Molecular Biology: Cloning, expression, purification



  • Sub-discipline - specific skills, crystallisation X-ray structure determination, SPR, NMR
  • A knowledge of  chemistry (computational or organic synthesis)
