Job Summary

Charles River are looking for a dynamic and influential Group Leader, who is ready to advance their career to the next level by joining our growing HTS Department. The role will be based at our Chesterford Park site, although you will be expected to interact across the CRL Early Discovery sites (Leiden in the Netherlands and Harlow in the UK), and with a diverse range of clients across the world.

Managing a group of approximately 4-6 Scientists, you will be responsible for their on-going development along with overseeing delivery of a project portfolio, ensuring staff are supported in scientific delivery and data are relayed back to clients in a timely manner.

Further Responsibilities:
•    To mentor and coach direct reports in achieving their potential and advancing their careers.
•    To guide junior members of the team in technical aspects of HTS, troubleshooting assays and techniques and aiding in assembly and presentation of large datasets to our clients.
•    To lead or have a significant influence on the strategy and execution of lab work on multiple simultaneous HTS projects.
•    To ensure client projects are run to time and budget, and proactively resolve issues when they arise.
•    To regularly interact with existing clients to ensure work is being performed to an acceptable standard, and to rationalize, plan and perform requests for additional project work as appropriate.
•    To aid with business development activities, including suggestion of novel hit-finding approaches to a range of clients, whilst managing activities and budgets appropriately.
•    To present own work (and that of others where appropriate) to clients and internal audiences, confidently with clear rationale.
•    To maintain an active interest in novel drug discovery screening techniques and disease area literature, applying these findings to current and potential future projects.
•    To ensure that all relevant reports (both direct and matrix managed) always operate in a safe manner, complying with all CRL site-based guidelines.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing and developing people, with significant experience in the planning and execution of biological assays to investigate novel targets in a range of assay formats (both biochemical and cellular). Your experience in analysing the output of these assays and directing appropriate follow-up strategies will be key for this role, as well as your skills in communicating these conclusions to your clients by teleconference, written report, or face-to-face presentations as appropriate. These skills will be exemplified by your track record of success in managing early-stage drug discovery projects, from idea to analysis of hits determined by HTS.

Candidates with existing experience in this area, along with formal line management experience will be at a distinct advantage - although those with an ambition to move into this area of science, or those who can demonstrate significant experience of informal mentoring and development of junior colleagues, are also encouraged to apply.
