Job Summary
The Director of Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) is responsible for providing subject matter expertise and leadership in EHS&S programs and practices across the enterprise.
Lead, direct and managing Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) functions related to their assigned Business Unit(s) for strategic and tactical needs in conjunction with the Enterprise EHS&S strategy and programs. Principal responsibilities include the facilitation of strategic development and delivery of leading edge EHS&S programs. Delivering continuous improvement and performance around core EHS&S metrics; keeping Business Unit Leadership and Site Leadership aware of EHS&S KPI, trends and opportunities for improvement; developing Business Unit EHS&S Strategic Plan in harmony with the enterprise EHS&S Strategic Plan and the Business Unit Strategic Business Plan. Develop network capability of EHS&S staff within the Business Unit. Participate in the development of Enterprise wide programs and practices.
This position will work remotely from a home office and does requires frequent domestic and occasional international travel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as a member of the assigned Business Unit Leadership Team.
- Develop assigned Business Unit EHS&S Strategy and implementation plan (3 yr. time horizon) in harmony with the enterprise EHS&S Strategic Plan and the Business Unit Strategic Business Plan. Accountable to deliver the plan.
- Partner with Business Unit and Site Leadership/EHS&S Leads to operationalize to include but not limited to the following:
- In support of BU EHS&S Strategy/Implementation plan develop/include annual EHS&S goals, objectives and performance metrics for the BU.
- Keep BU Leadership aware of BU specific EHS&S Strategy including Leading Indicators (programs) and Lagging Indicators (Performance – TRIR and Energy Intensity)
- Develop, recommend and manage EHS&S budget for BU. Coordinate budget needs with BU EHS&S strategy.
- Coach Site EHS&S Personnel on technical Skills as well as Influencing culture change. Facilitating Program Implementation, Areas of improvement – identifying and developing programs, collect EHS&S metrics – TRIR, Sustainability etc. and develop a culture of working safety and sustainably.
- Prepare Business Unit Leaders for Safety & Sustainability aspects of Quarterly Business Reviews.
- Evaluate site EHS&S staffing levels within their assigned Business Units:
- Identify where resources are needed including: dedicated site staff, opportunities to share a dedicated resource amongst sites in close geographic proximity.
- Identify training/coaching/career advancement opportunities for EHS&S staff.
- Provide Business Unit oversight of CRL’s EH&S policies, procedures and basic governance of EHS&S including:
- Implement CRL’s EHS&S Global Operating Framework (GOFs)
- Ensure the CRL EHS&S Management System – which stress employee and management involvement in and ownership of the EHS&S program – is implemented effectively at all sites within the BU.
- Drive timely completion of audit findings
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED:
- Oversee and direct programs which ensure compliance with applicable regulations and internal policies across the Business Unit.
- Actively engage locations and external organizations to identify, leverage and adopt best practices across the Business Unit and the enterprise.
- Support implementation of capital projects within the Business Unit with regards to EHS&S concerns and work with design team to identify opportunities to implement sustainable design concepts including sustainability, inherent safety and well buildings.
- Support due diligence associated with M&A activity and real estate transactional management within the Business Unit.
- Provide strategic and proactive direction on initiatives that will improve BU EHS&S performance while minimizing risks and exposures.
- Stay informed of current and new regulatory requirements and other guidelines considered for implementation. Communicate significant regulatory and technical information to appropriate personnel within the BU and enterprise.
- Develop enterprise wide programs, procedures and policies as part of defined initiatives with global resources.
- Effectively leverage facilities and EH&S staff where opportunities exist to combine resources to accomplish common goals and objectives.
- Develop short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, and staffing requirements. Oversee the development of a departmental plan for backup and succession of key departmental personnel.
- Recommend and implement techniques to improve productivity, reduce risk increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices.
- Direct the development and communication of departmental systems, SOPs, policies and procedures. Partner with Human Resources to develop and approve departmental job descriptions; ensure communication of duties and responsibilities to employees.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in Engineering or Engineering Sciences or related discipline. MS or MBA preferred.
• Experience: 10 + years related experience in direct, large corporation EHS&S management. 8+ years experience in managing staff.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
• Certification/Licensure: Certified Safety Professional CSP, PE/engineering license is a plus
• Other:

- Expert level knowledge and application of environment, health, safety and sustainability regulations and familiarity with EHS&S regulatory agencies’ regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DEP, DOT, NRC, etc).
- Must have basic knowledge of EHS&S Management Systems.
- Industrial hygiene skills and ergonomic program experience are a plus.
- Hands-on experience in a research, industrial or manufacturing work environment.
- Must be computer literate (Microsoft Office software).
- Proven ability to navigate in a highly matrixed environment and influence others without direct authority.
Compensation:
The pay range for this position is $180K – $200K USD annually. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
