Job Summary

The Associate Director will work closely with the Director, leading the department to achieve business performance, obtain maximum value and identify new opportunities to increase market share. They will explore and implement creative strategies to optimize department performance, grow market share and enhance competitive differentiation, as well as assist with the development and implementation of short- and long-term marketing strategies and tactics and ensure that market initiatives complement overall company goals and focus.


  • Work with operations, sales, and marketing staff to develop and implement strategies, portfolio development plans and positioning and messaging plans consistent with both corporate and business unit branding platforms.
  • Develop market position and define market strategy to gain market share through competitor takeaway or organically increasing current business: identify diverse customer drivers, market opportunities, competitive challenges, and requirements; work with corporate analytical services and others to prepare competitive market analyses and strategic options to grow market share, including modeling of alternative business scenarios; work closely with internal and external scientific staff to identify opportunities to enhance and expand service offering; identify and create synergistic marketing programs that cross product and business unit lines.
  • Collaboratively lead members of the marketing team to develop and implement effective tactical marketing campaigns and sales tools to support and achieve business goals and objectives.
  • Develop relationships with key industry thought leaders and create a pool of knowledgeable go-to clients for ad hoc market feedback and research.
  • Develop, implement, and utilize financial and CRM tools to identify potential sales opportunities (multi-site corporate accounts, dormant accounts, declining revenue, etc.) 
  • Develop, implement, and manage processes that evaluate the effectiveness of all marketing programs/projects and quantify payback in terms of leads generated, new customers, and sales levels.
  • Manage the collection of marketing and customer behavior related data and reporting of this data to senior management, in partnership with business management and corporate marketing as appropriate.
  • Personnel management activities for assigned group(s), including: scheduling, personnel actions (hiring, promotions, transfers, etc.), training and development, providing regular direction and feedback on performance, disciplinary actions and preparing and delivering annual performance and salary reviews.
  • Assist in the development of short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, staffing requirements and succession plans.
  • Assist in the development and recommendation of departmental budget and authorize expenditures.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of departmental training programs, including orientation.


Education:  Bachelors (BA/BS) or equivalent in scientific discipline. Advanced degree a plus.

Experience:  Seven to ten years of related experience or equivalent in a combination of marketing, product management, communications, and business management positions within a technical environment (e.g. biotech, pharmaceutical, medical device company, or laboratory). Sales and international experience a plus.

Other:  Proven ability to creatively develop and execute business-to-business product (service) marketing strategies. Knowledge of marketing concepts and techniques. Proven ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams to achieve established goals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
