Job Summary

 

The Project Manager/Trainer plans, organizes, and directs the daily activities of the Charles River staff. This position also develops and maintains the training program. 

 

This is a list of the duties to be performed in this role:

  • Assigns duties to Core Leads and animal care staff. Monitors performance of employees and conducts periodic performance evaluations. Investigates personnel problems and provides counseling and disciplinary actions to employees in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Conducts routine meetings with staff to keep them informed of current and future projects, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures that detailed, accurate records and files are maintained on regulated species as required by animal welfare, AAALAC, regulations and all research data collection is compliant with client guidelines.
  • Helps to develop, write and implement standard operating procedures for the care of laboratory animals and in support of the operation of the facility.
  • Develops and maintains the animal care weekend and holiday schedule to ensure that animal care is provided to all species in accordance with animal welfare regulations and guidelines. Assists BD Operations Manager with weekly animal study and animal receipt scheduling.
  • Directs, schedules, performs, and documents all relevant Task-specific technical and husbandry training.
  • Coordinates with the Operations Manager to maintain training matrices and syllabus for each employee.
  • Conducts interviews for the placement of animal care supervisors, animal care takers, cagewash personnel and animal health technicians.
  • Conducts AALAS certification training, USDA and applicable OLAW training to all animal care team to ensure best practices are maintained. Must maintain update on regulations.
  • Formulates teaching outline and determines instructional methods such as individual training, group instruction, demonstrations, workshops, retraining sessions, and annual SOP training.
  • Performs continuing education and training to maintain and enhance employee skills and capabilities, including SOP updates, animal welfare topics, operations, and maintenance.
  • Selects or develops teaching aids such as training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials, reference works and hands-on training.
  • Conducts refresher training on laboratory animal techniques to animal care staff and research teams under direction of the Attending Veterinarian.
  • Tests trainees to measure progress and to evaluate effectiveness of technical training.
  • Provides onsite orientation to new hires, while monitoring the progress of employees under guidance during training periods.
  • Provides technical and supervisory support as needed during workload surges or personnel shortages.
  • Makes suggestions on improving technical procedures in the animal facilities.

Job Qualifications

 

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

 

⦁    Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or related discipline. 
⦁    Experience:  3-5 years of experience in a research animal facility, of which three to five are in a supervisory capacity.  Minimum of two years’ experience in managing a training program for an animal facility.
⦁    Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level (LATG), CMAR preferred.
