Job Summary

We are seeking a Research Specialist I (Aquatics) for our Insourcing Solutions site in Bethesda, MD


The responsibilities of the Research Specialist are:

  • Provide zebrafish colony management support:
  • Perform zebrafish husbandry and colony management of stock and mutant lines. 
  • Maintain accurate detailed records utilizing written log sheets and File Maker/Excel databases regarding colony lines, including NIH stock numbers, genotype, date of birth, and numbers of fish, among other parameters. 
  • Coordinate imports and exports of fish/embryos.
  • Assist with technical procedures related to Aquatic species (e.g. obtain zebrafish sperm for cryopreservation and in vitro fertilization, facilitate animal breeding, embryo collection, embryo cleaning, staging and fixation; mutant and transgenic identification and propagation).
  • Train and assist lab members with standard aquatic species technical procedures and teach lab members about zebrafish physiology and care.
  • Isolate tissue samples from adult zebrafish and genotype zebrafish tissue samples using PCR
  • Perform DNA, RNA, morpholino micro-injections into 1-cell zebrafish embryos.
  • Perform various bench-top molecular biology procedures (e.g.  PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA purification, bacterial culture, restriction digestion, DNA ligation, Gibson assembly, mRNA isolation, reverse transcription, in vitro transcription, and in situ hybridization).
  • Monitor lab inventory, receive supply shipments, and order lab supplies to support daily operations
  • Monitor lab equipment and perform regular care and maintenance (e.g. cleaning, arranging service, managing service contracts)
  • Keep detailed, accurate records of all experiments, fish genetics, orders/invoices, and inventory
  • Work with members of the lab to support individual researcher’s projects and methods development
  • Contribute to Unit’s research goals by performing other duties as required.


The minimum qualifications for the Research Specialist are:

•    Education: B.A. or B.S. in a Life Sciences discipline, animal science, or similar discipline required or an AA in veterinary technology.
•    Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, excel Powerpoint), Filemaker, Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop.
•    Experience:  Minimum three years’ experience working in an animal research environment required. Six months of molecular biology, genetics, or biochemistry or similar experience.
•    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experiences listed above.
