Job Summary

Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for mechanical utility systems and energy optimization.  Work with all business units to conduct energy audits and identify saving opportunities. Support all business units with technical knowledge in mechanical utilities and energy efficiency for project reviews and trouble shooting. Work closely with project managers and local site management to coordinate design efforts and compile owner’s requirements for mechanical and utility systems. Manage, coordinate and review 3rd party consultant design efforts to support all business units. Use technical electrical knowledge to develop technical, detailed scope and execution plan for energy savings projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for providing expert technical support in mechanical engineering, utilities and energy conservation for new facilities and major renovations during the programming, design development, submittal reviews, construction, and commissioning/validation phases.
  • Leverage engineering expertise (i.e., HVAC, automation/BMS, Electrical CQV, GxP, and maintenance) in support of ongoing Global operations.
  • Ability to analyze the performance and troubleshoot steam, chilled water, HVAC, compressed air, water systems and large utility users. Evaluate options to optimize utility consumption.
  • Work independently as Engineering Expert to provide on demand troubleshooting to develop technical solutions for mechanical utility, safety and energy uses issues impacting operations.
  • Ability to work in manufacturing environment and communicate effectively with site maintenance personnel to resolve technical issues both onsite and remotely.
  • Ability to develop muti site programs and communicate to senior leadership, gain approval and manage / facilitate implementation. 
  • Provide support for Global Engineering design efforts in the execution capital projects and support of facilities operations.
  • Work closely with project managers and local site management to coordinate design efforts and compile owner’s requirements in alignment with design guidelines, commissioning, validation, and operational delivery of large-scale capital projects so that project objectives are attained.
  • Review design of MEP systems for property renovations or new building projects acting independently as the prime representative for the Global Engineering group.
  • Perform detailed A&E design package reviews as SME for facilities systems and provide team leadership, value engineering, and technical support for independent site projects as required. 
  • Assist sites to perform internal energy assessment on facilities related equipment and operations and support the energy savings project portfolio for CRL.
  • Packaging successful energy and optimization projects and facilitate replication across CRL where applicable. 
  • Generate RFPs, evaluate proposals, and make recommendations to management.
  • Alert developing problems where management intervention or oversight is required. Plan and implement appropriate actions or countermeasures necessary.
  • Work within a Global environment with the ability to influence outcomes of technically related activities.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering

Experience:  

  • 7-10 years of broad-based experience related to mechanical and utility systems within the life sciences industry (pharma, biotech, or R&D). 
  • 7-10 years of experience in identifying, defining, and implementing energy savings projects including management of the energy savings program.  
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the functionality of construction documents (specifications and drawings) and of the construction industry in general.  
  • Thorough understanding of facilities equipment including boilers, chillers, HVAC, Building Automation, and automated cleaning / sanitization systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a Global environment. Ability to present initiatives and communicate with senior leaders. 
  • Certification/Licensure:  Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or EIT preferred. 
  • Other:  Sound working knowledge of Building Codes, Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), AAALAC, FDA/EU and government regulatory requirements and guidelines. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize work and meet deadlines. Proficiency in standard software including Microsoft® Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, etc. Proficiency in CAD is preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Must regularly operate a computer and occasionally operate other office productivity equipment.
  • Must regularly communicate with employees/customers; must be able to exchange accurate information.
  • Must occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. 
  • Must occasionally climb ladders to access rooftop building equipment.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Comments:

  • Occasional international and domestic travel.

Compensation Data

The pay range for this position is $110,000/yr. – $150,000/yr. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
