Job Summary
Responsible for providing professional veterinary services. Oversee and perform veterinary procedures that support all aspects of veterinary care for the site. Assist the Director in oversight of the animal care and use program. May supervise or oversee veterinary and behavioral staff and manage the activities of assigned section to ensure effective performance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Oversee daily animal health assessment program.
• Perform veterinary rounds as scheduled, and provide clinical care and preventive medicine support.
• May perform surgical support and provide anesthesia, surgical and analgesic technical expertise/advice.
• Perform pre-shipment physical examination of animals assigned for delivery to customers, including radiographic review, ultrasonagraphy, Electrocardiogram (ECG), evaluation of routine screening tests and specific tests if required by customer.
• Responsible for the overall training program for veterinary technicians/staff. Ensure that training is properly documented and regularly updated as necessary.
• Oversee the Environmental Enhancement program for NHPs.
• Provide animal health care guidance for veterinary services personnel as required.
• Ensure that internal and external reports and other materials are prepared and submitted as required.
• Provide responses to internal/external inspections and quality audits of veterinary or animal welfare type content.
• Implement and monitor the preventive health program appropriate to the site’s needs.
• Serve as advisor to management in technical matters as they relate to the site including application of new technology and any changes in national policies, procedures, guidelines or regulations affecting animal care and use.
• Assist Director in oversight of quarantine program which includes participation in vendor management, e.g. reviewing vendor health information, communicating specific issues related to shipments to them, tracking overall vendor performance, and interacting with the CDC as warranted.
• Assist Director in oversight of animal holding program with respect to overall colony health preventative medicine, clinical care, and client owned animal colony management.
• Provide support for activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), including protocol review, program review and facility inspections. May serve on the IACUC.
• Ensure all procedures and processes are accomplished in accordance with the regulations as it relates to animal welfare and veterinary issues.
• May fill role of Veterinarian of Record (Attending Veterinarian)
• Write, review and update veterinary care and/or necropsy SOPs as required.
Job Qualifications
• Education: Veterinary degree (D.V.M./V.M.D.) required.
• Experience: Minimum of 6 years veterinary experience in an NHP environment. Two years supervisory/ management experience preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
• Certification/Licensure: Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state required. Ability to become licensed in Texas within 6 months. USDA accreditation or application submitted within 1 month of hire. Ability to obtain DEA license within 6 months. Current DEA license highly desired. ACLAM eligibility or accreditation is highly desired.
• Other: Computer literate and proficient with Microsoft Windows, PowerPoint and Excel.
Good communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies and guidelines that govern animal research, research conduct principles and current methodology of laboratory animal medicine and management required.
Compensation Data
The pay range for this position is $180,000 – $187,000 USD. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
