Electron Microscopy Technician II

Responsibilities

BASIC SUMMARY:

Independently perform basic to intermediate Electron Microscopy sample preparation skills.  Participate in the documentation of all activities and may perform review of data.   May also assist with training of less experienced Electron Microscopy Technicians. May be trained as SD/PI per management’s discretion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  
Log in samples and set up study files for each protocol.
Trim tissue, process and embed both viral and tissue specimens.
Prepare solutions/reagents, cut thick/thin sections on the ultramicrotome, and stain slides/grids.
Examine samples on the transmission electron microscope (TEM), performing particle counts per SOPs, and take select pictures/images.
Examine tissue samples on the TEM working closely with the project pathologist, and take select pictures/images.
Perform darkroom procedures, i.e., develop negatives, process prints, and operate/maintain all ancillary equipment. 
Label prints and write draft/final reports as required.
Communicate with clients on technical issues.
Understand and conduct all processes in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations, corporate Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and the protocol.
Review and revise technical SOPs and forms.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:  Associate’s degree (A.A./A.S.) / Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in biology or related discipline.
Experience:  Minimum of 1 year related experience in electron microscopy.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
Certification/Licensure:   Valid driver’s license required.  
Other: Placement at this levels requires successful completion /competency of the required tasks of the position preceding this level and continued ability to perform those tasks are required.  Must be able to perform effectively as a team member, accurately record data, follow verbal and written instructions, maintain a positive work atmosphere, communicate effectively, and interact in a professional manner with management, coworkers and sponsors.  Must be able to work independently.
