Associate Operations Manager

BASIC SUMMARY: 

Under the Supervision of Operations management, assists site personnel to maintain performance levels consistent with and according to company standards and client objectives.    

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.  They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified.

 

  • Assists in information gathering and sourcing candidates for new and current contracts.
  • Acts as corporate liaison to designated contract business clients to assess contract performance - including meeting or exceeding standards with respect to animal health and welfare, facilities condition, sanitation levels and facility security.  Reports findings to Operations Director with recommendations for improvements.
  • Serves as temporary backfill for Project Managers at small contract sites in cases of leaves of absence, vacations, key personnel vacancies or new contract start ups.
  • Supports site leadership to build competence among employees by participating in appropriate training activities and through appropriate supervisory related activities (e.g. recruitment, separation, performance appraisal, disciplinary actions, etc.).  Participates in employee programs and activities.  Supports and affirms the company policy of Equal Opportunity through Affirmative Action.
  • Reviews, comprehends and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area.  Ensures that laboratory animals at contract sites are cared for and maintained in accordance with Animal Welfare Act and the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and other applicable regulations and policies.
  • Gauges consistent practice of general company and customer’s safety policies and procedures.  Ensures site staff operate and maintains equipment and supplies according to SOPs and all applicable safety guidelines.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conducts periodic meetings with site leadership to keep them informed of current and future projects, policies and procedures.
  • Assists Project Managers and supervisors to ensure that assigned animal care staff maintain adequate care, feeding and delivery of animals; sanitation of the equipment and facilities; inventory, procurement and storage of supplies; and the maintenance of related equipment and facilities.
  • Actively interacts with client representatives as required to respond and facilitate the resolution of problems, including, but not limited to the allocation of space, use of equipment and personnel, diagnosis of and control of disease, provisions of animal care and adequate veterinary care.
  • Helps managers and trainers orient new animal care personnel with facility and company policies, work rules and guidelines.
  • Works with Operations Director and HR staff to investigate personnel problems and assist in developing performance improvement plans, provide counseling and disciplinary actions to employees in accordance with company policies and procedures. 
  • Periodically reviews CRL staff records, ensuring that detailed, accurate records and files are maintained on regulated species as required by animal welfare regulations and guidelines, as well as facility SOPs and policies. Reports findings to Operations Director as instructed.
  • Periodically reviews site quality assurance procedures for animal health surveillance, monitoring of the effectiveness of facility sanitation, cage washing and autoclaving procedures, monitoring of incoming animal shipments for container integrity and animal health, monitor the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), internal facility reports for monitoring deviations from pre-established parameters, other quality assurance services as deemed necessary (e.g., water cultures) by the Operations Director.
  • Helps facility managers and staff review and analyze operational needs and make recommendations to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of animal care services.
  • Participates as required in the development of projections for equipment, supplies and personnel needed to effectively operate the research facilities in a manner consistent with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and all local, state and federal requirements.
  • Helps facility managers and staff develop, review and write site specific standard operating procedures for the care, use and enrichment of laboratory animals and the operation of the facility.
  • Helps facility managers and staff establish specifications for recommendations for the selection and purchase of animal care related equipment.
  • Assists in assessing training needs, as well as, developing and presenting training for staff and investigators.  Works with technical trainers and supervisors as needed to help develop course content and materials for training and continuing education of the animal care staff to achieve AALAS certification. 
  • Generates and submits internal and external reports in the required formats and timeframes.  Reports to supervisor on operations-related issues.  Prepares and submits required written records, charts, logs and inventories as requested by supervisor.
  • Maintains required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:   Bachelor of Science in Animal Science or related field.

 

Experience:  Experience:  Minimum of five (5) years of experience in laboratory animal science technology supervision for a laboratory animal program required. Demonstrable experience with managing direct/indirect costs, barrier and conventional facilities, working with large and small animals, and  ability to perform injections, collections, dosing and specialty work with animal models.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

 

Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level (LATG).

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to perform independently with a minimum of direct supervision and demonstrate sound professional judgment and positive, professional leadership skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the contract staffing product, the division’s organizational structure and all position functions within the division.
  • Knowledge of regulations and guidelines on the humane care and use of laboratory animals, including USDA regulations and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and familiarity with the AAALAC International accreditation procedures. 
    • Knowledge of laboratory animal facility setup, equipment and staffing requirements.
    • Demonstrable veterinary technical skills with multiple species and ability to identify sick animals and provide medical treatment as prescribed.
    • Computer literacy in word processing and database record keeping required. Computer experience with programs MSWord, PowerPoint and Excel, and administrative experience in support of laboratory animal operations preferred.   
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with clients, customers, coworkers, and supervisors.

Breeds, raises and cares for small research animals on behalf of, or for sale to, customers. Follows proper breeding and animal care procedures. Monitors animal behavior and physical attributes to ensure animal health and confirm appropriate phenotype; reports any findings. Ensures biosecurity.
