Job Summary


We are seeking for a Regional Head of Behavior and Enrichment to work at our site located in Senneville.

The Head of Behaviour and enrichment is responsible for leading, developing and improving the behavioural management and enrichment program, as well as verifying the program for all species meets all applicable regulatory guidelines and animal welfare/wellbeing standards including the policies/regulations of: Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, (IACUC), the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) and the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC).



  • Develop a state-of-the-art behavioral management and enrichment program for Canada adapted to the CRO environment in collaboration with veterinary management and other staff members
  • Leads team members in performing behavioural assessments and treatments, as well as ensuring care and well-being compliance with above guidelines and relevant scientific literature
  • Perform animal well-being and behavioral assessments independently, as needed
  • Mentor behavioural and enrichment team members and provide training for personnel with less experience in product design, purchase, fabrication overview, and animal well-being compliance
  • Conduct training for other Charles River staff 
  • Researches scientific literature, regulatory and animal welfare/well-being requirements and new practices in animal enrichment and communicates them to management and staff
  • Initiates and leads implementation of new processes and/or projects designed to improve the company’s Behavioral Management and Enrichment Program, including producing reports and presentations to colleagues and management at various stages of design, assessment or implementation process
  • Researches, develops, modifies and/or designs enrichment products and procedures, including creating sketches for potential products, providing oversight in the fabrication of prototypes, and evaluating the novel products or procedures using evidence-based animal welfare assessments within budget and considering the CRO environment and based on feedback from other staff members
  • Coordinates creation of enrichment items for singly housed and stock colonies and the assembly of enrichment items
  • Orders samples/materials; creates working models
  • Writes, revises, and reviews/edits relevant SOPs
  • Supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws to include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance and completing annual performance review on or before due date; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

•    Développer un programme de gestion comportementale et d'enrichissement de pointe au Canada adapté à l'environnement CRO en collaboration avec la direction vétérinaire et d'autres membres du personnel
•    Dirige les membres de l'équipe dans la réalisation d'évaluations comportementales et de traitements, ainsi que dans le respect des soins et du bien-être avec les lignes directrices ci-dessus et la littérature scientifique pertinente
•    Effectuer des évaluations du bien-être et du comportement des animaux de manière indépendante, au besoin
•    Encadrer les membres de l'équipe de comportement et d'enrichissement et former le personnel ayant moins d'expérience dans la conception de produits, l'achat, la présentation de la fabrication et la conformité au bien-être des animaux.
•    Diriger la formation des autres employés de Charles River
•    Recherche la littérature scientifique, les exigences réglementaires et de bien-être / bien-être animal et les nouvelles pratiques en matière d'enrichissement animal et les communique à la direction et au personnel
•    Initie et dirige la mise en œuvre de nouveaux processus et / ou projets conçus pour améliorer le programme de gestion comportementale et d'enrichissement de l'entreprise, y compris la production de rapports et de présentations aux collègues et à la direction à différentes étapes du processus de conception, d'évaluation ou de mise en œuvre
•    Recherche, développe, modifie et / ou conçoit des produits et des procédures d'enrichissement, y compris la création de croquis pour des produits potentiels, la supervision de la fabrication de prototypes et l'évaluation des nouveaux produits ou procédures en utilisant des évaluations du bien-être animal fondées sur des preuves dans le budget et en tenant compte du CRO environnement et sur la base des commentaires des autres membres du personnel
•    Coordonne la création d'articles d'enrichissement pour les colonies individuelles et de stock et l'assemblage d'articles d'enrichissement
•    Commande des échantillons / matériaux ; crée des modèles de travail
•    Rédige, révise et révise / édite les SOP pertinentes
•    Responsabilités de supervision conformément aux politiques de l’organisation et aux lois applicables, y compris l’entretien, l’embauche et la formation des employés ; planifier, attribuer et diriger le travail; évaluer les performances et effectuer l'examen annuel des performances à la date d'échéance ou avant; récompenser et discipliner les employés; traiter les plaintes et résoudre les problèmes.

Job Qualifications

Formal training as Behaviorist (MSc, PhD or DVM with completed residency preferred)

Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with laboratory animals (graduate studies and/or residency considered as relevant experience)
Previous experience working with animals in the behavioral field; ABI (Animal Behavioral Institute) certification or equivalent
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English at all levels inside and outside the organization. Communication skills in French would be preferred given the regional
