Job Summary

We are pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity for a talented, highly motivated individual to provide scientific and managerial leadership within the Chemistry department at our drug discovery facilities in Chesterford Park, Saffron Walden, UK. In addition to management, mentoring and development of scientists within their team, the successful candidate will work with a diverse range of global organisations, providing discipline scientific leadership as well as influencing internal project teams to drive scientific excellence.   

 

 Main Responsibilities 
•    To provide managerial leadership within the Chemistry department, with responsibility for health and safety, performance management, objective setting, providing feedback and motivating and developing staff. 
•    To represent the Early Discovery management team to all staff and to contribute to the management and performance of the Chemistry department.
•    To provide chemistry and drug discovery services to clients using expertise and initiative to define and deliver agreed project objectives.
•    To provide scientific leadership to project teams by designing, influencing and co-coordinating medicinal chemistry work plans, and using sound scientific decision making and creative problem solving skills to achieve project goals.
•    To contribute to Business Development activities.
•    To contribute as needed to operational leadership within the department, coordinating internal processes such a laboratory management and health and safety. 
•    To proactively influence scientific and IT infrastructure, working to simplify and enhance processes to improve effectiveness.

Requirements

•    A first degree in chemistry or a closely related subject.
•    Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, as demonstrated both internally and externally with clients.
•    Experience in motivating and developing others, e.g. management or supervision/mentoring of junior scientists.
•    A positive role model with a ‘can-do’ attitude, who contributes to departmental goals and promotes best practice.
•    Broad experience in medicinal chemistry across different phases of drug discovery (e.g. active-to-hit, hit-to-lead, lead optimisation). 
•    Strong track record of scientific impact in projects, as evidenced by publications and/or co-inventorship on multiple patent applications.
•    Experience of designing and coordinating chemistry work plans for others, either at CRL or with third parties.
•    Exceptional problem solving skills, sound scientific judgement and high quality decision making, which has impacted positively on project deliverables.
•    Pro-active member of the Chemistry management team.
•    Awareness of how project resources and finances are managed within an acceptable budget.
•    A dynamic and flexible approach towards achieving client-based objectives, with developing strategic thinking.
•    Ability to prepare high quality scientific documents to challenging deadlines.
•    High quality contributions to Business Development proposals and face to face meetings.
•    Models the Charles River Values of Care, Lead, Own and Collaborate.
•    Must be able to work at Chesterford Park, Saffron Walden, UK.
