Job Summary

Charles River are looking to recruit for a Finance Business Partner on a permanent basis, this role is within the Early Discovery, a division with c$100m revenue and c600 scientists and support staff. Operating in sites in the UK and the Netherlands, Early Discovery provides drug discovery services to the bioscience community and these collaborations cover the spectrum from small, single discipline projects to fully integrated drug discovery projects.  


The Finance Business Partner is a key role within the Early Discovery finance team and is responsible for maintaining the financial integrity of the division and deputising for the Associate Director of Finance as required.   This role will proactively analyse revenue, operating costs, capital expenditure and key performance indicators for management reporting and forecasting within the Early Discovery division of Charles River.


A key aspect of the role is to ensure that revenue is recognised and reported on a timely and accurate basis, ensuring compliance with relevant accounting principles and Charles River policies.  There will also be responsibility for providing business partnering support for the Leiden site in the Netherlands. This role will be home based initially with the hope that we will be able to welcome the successful incumbent to our Saffron Walden site in the near future. 


Main Tasks
•    Build relationships throughout the Early Discovery organisation across operational departments to gain insight into the drivers of the current and future revenues
•    A complete and thorough understanding of current revenue generating projects is maintained
•    Project initiation and revenue recognition is consistent with relevant accounting principles and company policies
•    As part of the month end process, provide timely and accurate revenue analysis to inform manual journals and provide an overview of business performance.
•    Prepare revenue forecasts supported by appropriate rationale on a rolling weekly basis.
•    Understand the rationale for the revenue SOX controls and how they address risks around revenue recognition.
•    Analyse complex financial data and extracts and define relevant information; interpret data for the purpose of determining past financial performance and/or to project a financial probability 
•    Prepare schedules for management accounts and make suggestions for improvements to analysis and KPIs to aid decision making
•    Prepare and upload Corporate KPI template
•    Improvement of monthly cost centre reporting framework to ensure relevance, reliability and timeliness for cost centre owners.
•    Work with the business to develop project profitability reporting.
•    Responsibility for monitoring capital expenditure within the division and co-ordinating monthly capital expenditure calls with the business
•    Prepare the financial ROI to support investment business cases for go/no go decisions
•    Develop financial reports for forecasting, trending and results analysis on both top line, expenses and capital expenditure.
•    Support the monthly P&L forecast, with responsibility for certain cost categories.

•    Support the preparation and presentation of the annual budget
•    Responsible for the FX neutral calculations
•    Develop new approaches, processes or methods to solve new business problems, act as an agent of change and continuously re-evaluating process to achieve expecting earnings growth of the sites
•    Provide information/commentary to the internal and external auditors as required
•    Support the Associate Director of Finance with ad hoc analysis and take an active role in other projects as required



•    Educated to degreel level within Finance and Accouting or similar discipline with an accounting qualification e.g. CIMA, ACCA, ACA
•    Highly motivated with excellent communication skills (written and verbal0
•    Post qualification experience, ideally within another CRO (Contract Research Organisation) or another Biotech 
•    Business partnering experience, with the ability to work with multiple entities and work across regions effectively
•    Experience in the collation/interpretation of financial and other information
•    Experience in the preparation and presentation of financial reports and information independently with minimal supervision 
•    Additional experience with revenue recognition issues and SOX controls highly desirable 
•    Hands on experience in preparation of financial analysis to support investment business cases also desirable
