Job Summary

Charles River are currently recruiting within our Finance department for an Assistant Management Accountant to join the team on a permanent basis. This role is within the Early Discovery, a division with c$100m revenue and c600 scientists and support staff. Operating in sites in the UK and the Netherlands, Early Discovery provides drug discovery services to the bioscience community and these collaborations cover the spectrum from small, single discipline projects to fully integrated drug discovery projects.  


The Assistant Management Accountant is an entry level position for someone who is keen to further their finance career in an interesting and challenging environment.  It is important role within the Early Discovery finance team providing support for several critical processes in the division.  The role will also have significant interaction with the Project Co-ordination team to ensure accurate reporting of the revenue from scientific projects. This role will be home based initially, with the hopes to welcome the success incumbent to the Saffron Walden, Cambridgeshire site in the near future. 


A key aspect of the role is to ensure that the division passes its Sarbanes Oxley (“SOX”) controls on a monthly and quarterly basis. 


Main Tasks 

•    Build relationships throughout the Early Discovery organisation across operational departments to gain insight into the drivers of the current and future revenues
•    Responsible for the preparation of the SOX revenue controls on a monthly and quarterly basis
•    Work with the Project Co-ordination group to support the preparation of revenue forecasts.
•    Allocate support hours to individual projects (both UK and the Netherlands)
•    Transfer intercompany FTE hours from the Netherlands to the UK
•    Revenue mapping of commissions for Decision Centre
•    Prepare schedules for management accounts and improve processes to ensure deadlines are met
•    Maintain the month end cost and purchase order (“PO”) file
•    Prepare monthly cost centre reporting and liaise with cost centre owners as necessary
•    Work with shared services to review large month end costs for appropriate accounting treatment
•    Prepare the weekly Direct Labour Utilisation (“DLU”) report and distribute to the business
•    Reconcile headcount to Corporate reporting
•    Support the monthly P&L forecast, with responsibility for certain cost categories
•    Support the preparation and presentation of the annual budget
•    Prepare the annual standard cost analysis and ensure that necessary approvals are gained before upload into SAP
•    Provide information/commentary to the internal and external auditors as required
•    Support the Associate Director of Finance with ad hoc analysis and take an active role in other projects as required


•    Graduate with a minimum 2:1 degree (ideally within a relevant discipline: Finance, Accounting, Maths or Economics)
•    Part qualified e.g. CIMA, ACCA, ACA    
•    Experience in the collation/interpretation of financial and other information and the preparation of financial reports and information is essential 
•    Previous experience of working in a CRO (Contract Research Organisation) would be highly desirable
•    Experience with revenue recognition issues and SOX controls would be preferred. 
•    Able to work with multiple entities and foreign currencies effectively
•    Highly motivated with excellent verbal and written communication skills 
•    Strong problem solver, able to use initiative with work well with others
