Job Summary

We are seeking an Associate Supervisor - (Small Animal) for our Breed Department located in Raleigh, NC.   The Associate Supervisor - (Small Animal)  will provide daily supervision of personnel and operations to ensure achievement of departmental goals and levels; handle basic personnel-related issues with assistance; and assist in the handling of more complex personnel-related issues.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Provides direct daily supervision and review work of limited assigned departmental employees to ensure accuracy and adherence to pertinent departmental policies, SOPs, safety procedures and biosafety protocols. Schedule and prioritize workload of assigned group.
  • Assists in the coordination and scheduling of activities of the department through hands-on technical support, delegation of responsibility and/or authority to departmental subordinates.
  • Oversees production and shipping activities of assigned group, including SOPs and OORs.  Assists in the performance of production and shipping activities as necessary.
  • Actively interacts with and provides technical assistance to customers as required to resolve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints.
  • Assists in the interview and selection of qualified non-exempt personnel.  Assists in developing recommendations regarding personnel actions, including hiring, promotions and raises.  Partners with Human Resources and depart¬mental management to assist in the handling of disciplinary issues.  Assist in the drafting of appropriate personnel action paperwork.
  • Identifies training and development needs of direct reports.  Assists in the development, implementa¬tion and delivery of depart¬mental training programs; ensure that direct reports receive departmental orientation and necessary on-the-job training.  Maintains group training manual and training records.
  • Monitors performance of direct reports.  Assists in providing regular coaching and counseling.  Assists in preparation and delivery of salary and performance reviews of direct reports.
  • Schedules overtime as authorized.  Reviews and recommends approval of time cards.  Assists in the coordination of vacation/time off schedules.
  • Assists in the development of recommendations for short-range operating objectives, organizational structure of direct reports and staffing requirements.
  • Assists in the development of a departmental plan for backup and succession of key technical personnel.
  • Assists in ensuring optimum performance of group function.  Recommends and implements techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices.
  • Assists in the development, maintenance and communication of departmental systems and SOPs.  Assists in the development and communication of job descriptions for subordinate positions.
  • Assists in ensuring that departmental equipment is maintained in good working condition and that departmental area(s) are maintained in a clean and orderly condition.  Assists in ensuring proper recycling and setup of cages in assigned area(s).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in life sciences or related discipline.
  • 2+ years related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer experience (ie:  MS Office Suite & data entry)

 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • ALAT Certification
