Job Summary

  • To adhere to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations and organizational Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs).
  • Provide leadership and counsel for the surgery team.
  • Works with Principal Research Surgeon to delegate projects, technical work (e.g. surgical procedures) and administrative duties (e.g. SOPs) as appropriate.  
  • To perform study specific surgeries in a wide variety of laboratory animal species.
  • Develop and refine surgical techniques using literature review and consultants when appropriate.
  • Work to develop and implement new procedures, techniques or equipment to maintain a modern standard of care.
  • To provide support to different departments to solve problems with current procedures or offer expertise for improvement.
  • To provide costing for surgical models and procedural models on study.
  • To provide proper surgery scheduling needs pertaining to a study and to resolve any issues resulting.
  • To ensure adequate and appropriate training of technical staff on surgery and surgery related topics (e.g.: aseptic technique, anesthesia/analgesia) in addition to moderate and difficult surgical and technical trainings.
  • Ensure staff have been signed off on activities prior to being assigned on a study.     
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Animal health technician or equivalent
  • >5 years of advanced surgery experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • CALAS and/or ASR certification is an asset.
