Job Summary

Charles River are looking for a dynamic and influential Group Leader, who is ready to advance their career to the next level by joining our growing team at the High Peak site in Derbyshire, the home of the Retrogenix Cell Microarray Technology. The role will be based at the High Peak site in Chinley to lead the Core Technology Team and will additionally provide opportunities for you to interact across the CRL Early Discovery sites. The appointed Group Leader will be a key member of the High Peak Management Team providing strong scientific, operational and leadership to own team and the wider business.

Job Qualifications

Main tasks & responsibilities:


•    Line management of up to 6 direct reports (scientific staff) in accordance with company directions and policies. Responsible for performance reviews, succession planning, development and training of team members. 
•    To mentor and coach direct reports in achieving their potential and advancing their careers.
•    To ensure that all relevant reports operate in a safe manner at all times and ensure compliance with CRL site-based safety and compliance guidelines.
•    To be proficient in all aspects of the Retrogenix Cell Microarray Technology, this includes lab based protocols, quality control procedures and documentation.
•    Lead the team to produce high quality cell microarray slides meeting QC criteria and demand.
•    To ensure that cell supply requirements for Core Technology and client specific projects are met.
•    To produce production statistics for Group Leader.
•    To guide junior members of the team in technical aspects of the science and technology at the High Peak site, troubleshoot when required and present data/updates internally to our teams, or to clients where appropriate.
•    Contribute to the management and performance of the High Peak Team by taking on selected responsibilities.
•    Have a dynamic and flexible approach towards achieving objectives and meeting challenging deadlines is required, as is the ability to communicate confidently and concisely with internal teams and clients via teleconferences, presentations and written reports.
•    In addition to leading your own team, you will be comfortable communicating across CRL sites in order to drive efficiencies and enhance best practice.


The ideal candidate will have experience of the drug development process and experience of a variety of screening cascades.  Scheduling and executing production plans will be key to the role along with downstream QC analysis. 

These skills will be demonstrated by your experience in a production role.  Being able to work to tight timelines and the ability to modify workflow is vital.  You will have a track record of success in the projects/processes which you have worked on.  

Candidates with existing experience in microarray technology will be at a significant advantage, although those with an ambition to move into this area, with significant experience of complex biology, informal mentoring and development of junior colleagues, are also encouraged to apply.
