Research Leader in Scale-up Chemistry

Due to our continued growth we have an exciting opportunity for individuals aiming to further develop their managerial skills in a fast-paced CRO environment.  We are looking for a dynamic, highly motivated Chemist to provide scientific leadership within the Scale Up Chemistry team at our drug discovery facilities in Harlow, Essex, UK.  In addition, this high-profile role will see you working with a diverse range of global organisations to support integrated drug discovery programmes and the transition of projects into early development and GMP manufacture.


Main responsibilities

  • To provide dynamic scientific leadership to project teams by designing, influencing and co-coordinating work plans, and using sound scientific decision making and creative problem-solving skills to achieve project goals.
  • Extensive expertise in the synthesis of key intermediates and APIs on the 10g -1kg scale, with the ability to trouble shoot and develop new routes from Medicinal Chemistry.
  • Conduct synthetic organic chemistry and to plan synthetic routes and perform literature searches to support on-going projects.
  • Act as subject matter specialist, advising integrated project teams on material supply strategy
  • To coordinate and transfer technical knowledge to third party GMP CROs.
  • To contribute to, and lead Business Development activities.

Key requirements


  • A first degree in chemistry or a closely related subject.
  • Extensive expertise in scientific leadership of teams and synthesis to help deliver late stage intermediates and APIs on the 10g -1kg scale: able to trouble shoot, develop new routes from Medicinal Chemistry and prepare technical transfer packages.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, sound scientific judgement and high quality decision making, which has impacted positively on project deliverables.
  • A positive role model with a ‘can-do’ attitude, who contributes to departmental goals, innovation and promotes best practice with strong evidence of interacting closely across disciplines.
  • Experience in motivating and developing others, e.g. mentoring of junior scientists
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, as demonstrated both internally and externally with clients.
  • Business awareness skills to monitor project resources and finances within an acceptable budget, ideally gained in a CRO environment; contributions to Business Development proposals and face to face meetings.
  • A dynamic and flexible approach towards achieving client-based objectives, with developing strategic thinking.

  • Must be able to work at Harlow, Essex, UK.
