Job Summary

Charles River is seeking an ambitious, innovative and highly motivated drug hunter to join our Senior Chemistry Management team, within Discovery as an Associate Director of Chemistry.

Main responsibilities

  • To provide line leadership of chemistry teams, driving high performance through effective objective setting, coaching, motivating, engaging and empowering staff at all levels. A passion for personal development of self and others will be required.
  • To act as a key representative of the Senior Chemistry Management Team, contributing to:
    • Influencing the scientific direction and strategic vision for the chemistry department
    • Identifying new areas for growing capabilities and/or to make process efficiency gains
    • Promoting high scientific visibility of capabilities internally and externally
    • Actively monitoring the project portfolio
    • Resource and budget management
    • Influencing and driving recruitment strategy
    • Ensuring high standards of health and safety
  • To provide independent scientific leadership and/or oversight within complex integrated project teams. Influencing project strategy and decision making, overseeing work plans, influencing clients, actively managing project resources and finances and collaborating effectively across disciplines and business units within Charles River to achieve project goals.
  • To identify and implement new technologies and creative approaches to increase effectiveness, engaging support and implementing at a department level.
  • To take a leading role in business development activities, working independently with colleagues in Business Development to prepare scientific proposals and present these to potential new clients.
  • To communicate clearly and effectively at a strategic level with key stakeholders, interfacing positively with clients, across disciplines and presenting new initiatives internally to gain buy in.

Candidate Profile 

  • A PhD in chemistry with broad expertise in drug discovery covering different therapeutic areas and project phases, across target classes and gene families (e.g. active-to-hit, hit-to-lead, lead optimisation).
  • A strong commitment to personal development to enable future progression within the organisation.
  • An experienced line manager who has successfully motivated, developed and mentored scientists and managers with a range of experience, with examples of impact on personal development goals.
  • Evidence of impact on strategy at a departmental level.
  • An interest in new technologies and disruptive approaches to continuous improvement, with a willingness to innovate and help define future direction
  • A dynamic and flexible approach towards achieving objectives, with exceptional problem solving skills, sound scientific judgement and high quality decision making
