Job Summary

The Responsibilities of the Facitliy Supervisor we are seeking for our site in Chicago, IL are:

 

The primary role will oversee the activities of animal husbandry staff at the site. Acts as senior onsite advisor to Assist Facility Supervisors, animal care technicians, and animal facility attendants, and collaborates with the client veterinary and administrative support staff to maintain operational performance levels.

 

Ensures the proper inventory, care, feeding and delivery of animals, sanitation of the equipment and facilities, procurement and storage of supplies and the maintenance of related equipment and facilities.  Reviews and analyzes operational facility needs and makes recommendations to enhance the efficiency. Develops, writes and implements SOP’s for the care and enrichment of lab animals and the operation of the facility. Proactively interacts with ARC personnel, faculty and research staff to respond to all requests, inquiries, and complaints about adequate animal care and facilities operations. Participates in the development of the animal care weekend and holiday schedule. Participates in the emergency on-call rotation. Facilitates the resolution of problems related to the allocation of space, use of equipment, efficient use of personnel, diagnosis of and control of disease, provisions of animal care and adequate veterinary care. Ensures site preparedness for all regulatory inspections, including USDA, IACUC and AALAC inspections.

 

Monitors performance of employees and conducts evaluations. Work with Human Resources to investigate personnel problems; provides counseling and disciplinary actions to employees. As well as conducting interviews for the placement of animal care supervisors, animal care technicians and animal facility attendants. Conducts periodic meetings with facilities staff to keep them informed of current and future projects, policies and procedures. Works with the Receiving department and Technical Services staff to coordinate the movement of animals throughout the facility and intake of new animals. Develops and presents course content and materials for training and continuing education of the animal care staff to achieve AALAS certification.

Job Qualifications

The following are minimum requirements related to the Facility Supervisor position.

 

  • Education:  Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science or related discipline. 
  • Experience:  3 to 5 years of laboratory animal facility experience with no less than 1 year of successful performance in a supervisory or management role. Knowledge of and experience with USDA regulations, laboratory animal welfare guidelines and AAALAC, International guidelines. One year of computer experience with MSWord, PowerPoint and Excel programs and administrative experience in support of site operations required.
  • Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Technologist (LATG) level.
