Under the direction of the Manager, Animal Care, this position provides direction and leadership for the daily operations of BCH veterinary program.  Maintains performance levels consistent with and according to Children’s Hospital Animal Resources (ARCH) standards and requirements.  Collaborates with the husbandry staff to insure that the health and welfare of laboratory animals are maintained in compliance with local, state, federal and institutional guidelines and regulations. Responsible for providing back up and assistance for the Manager, Animal Care.  Serves as a role model for staff.

  • Responsible for the training of veterinary technicians in the following; animal health rounds, techniques, such as injections, asepsis, and equipment monitoring and maintenance, and veterinary duties as required.


  • Coordinates and assists in ensuring that there is adequate coverage for the animal health reports checks and rechecks.


  • Provides support to veterinary technicians to help cover areas that are lacking coverage.


  • Responsible for ensuring and maintaining veterinary records such as, sentinel health reports, drug log audits, inventory supply as well as ordering supplies for the veterinary group.


  • Assists the assistant veterinary technician with sentinel health monitoring program.


  • Ensures that all animal rooms are rounded on a consistent schedule, meeting with veterinary technicians weekly to discuss and ensure complete rounds are being performed.


  • Maintains quality performance of departmental and client objectives - including meeting/exceeding departmental standards with respect to animal health and welfare.

  • Conduct routine inspection of all animal holding rooms to ensure all health issues are addressed in a timely manner, post-operative analgesia is being documented, and special logbooks are updated per protocol.
  • Participate in the implementation and training of site-specific standard operating procedures (SOP's), in compliance with all state, federal and industry requirements. Oversee adherence to site SOP's and all required documentation related to department.  Coordinate operations with the assistance of staff support departments and personnel.
  • Inspect and ensure procedural space where animal work is being conducted is being maintained by veterinary technicians through investigator communications in area of responsibility.


  • Actively interact with customers as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance. Act as liaison between scientific staff and support personnel.


  • Practices, trains and assists in ensuring that consistent practices of general company and safety policies and procedures, including those related to biohazards, chemical hazards and radioactive substances.  Supervise in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.


  • Maintains required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.


  • Assists in any contract related activity, as assigned by Manager, to complete the required work.




  • Education:  Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree
  •   Two to four years veterinary technical experience in a research setting.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the requirements as listed above.
  • Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) or higher or ability to successfully achieve ALAT certification within one (1) year of hire/promotion required. 




  • Working knowledge of laboratory animal facilities operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and respond timely to the needs of faculty, research personnel and ARCH Client staff to ensure that excellent customer service is provided at all times.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Positive, professional leadership skills to: coach and influence employees; counsel,

discipline and conduct productive performance evaluations. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with clients, customers, coworkers, and supervisors

  • Working knowledge of animal health conditions, treatments, surgical, and anesthesia knowledge.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The position requires direct contact with a variety of laboratory animal species.
    • Computer literacy in word processing and database record keeping in support of laboratory animal operations preferred.




  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and talk or hear.  The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms and type at a computer or typewriter. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.


  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.




  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works with computers. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, biohazard materials and risk of electrical shock.


  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
