Job Summary


We are seeking a Veterinary Technician for our Insourcing Solutions site in Bethesda, MD.


The following are responsibilities related to the Veterinary Technician:


  • Reviews, comprehends and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area.  
  • Works closely with Clinical Veterinarian(s) to perform daily health assessments of colony laboratory animals.  Administers animal treatments as instructed by Clinical Veterinarian(s).
  • Performs technical functions required by research protocols, such as daily clinical observations and health examinations of sick animals, prior to reporting adverse findings to Clinical Veterinarian. 
  • Provides technical support, e.g., animal handling and restraint, weaning, tail snips, ear tagging, blood and other tissues sample collection, injections, treatments, dosage calculations, surgical preparation, pre-, peri-, and post-operative observations, and assisting with research procedures as directed.
  • Actively interacts with customers as required to resolve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance. 
  • Provides environmental enrichment feed and other enrichment stimuli and/or provides behavioral assessments.
  • Performs animal husbandry, including feed, watering, and cleaning cages, as required.  
  • Prepares and submits written reports, charts, logs and inventories as requested by Supervisor. 
  • Maintains accurate records of animal breeding, health, and housing or support areas as required by Institute and facility
  • Provides quality assurance, including animal health surveillance, monitoring of the effectiveness of facility sanitation, cage washing and autoclaving procedures, monitoring of incoming animal shipments for container integrity and animal health, monitoring the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), internal facility reporting for monitoring deviations from pre-established parameters, and other quality assurance services (e.g., water cultures) as required by the Project Officer.
  • Operates equipment and uses supplies according to safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures. Complies with safety policies and procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances.


The following are minimum qualifications related to the Veterinary Technician position:


  • Education:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. BS degree in Animal Science, Biology, or similar, discipline or AA in Veterinary Technology preferred. 
  • Experience:  Experience working with animals in biomedical research required or companion animal practice  
  • Certification/Licensure:  Eligible to take the LAT certification exam required.   
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
