Job Summary

We are seeking an Aquatics Specialist III for our Insourcing Solutions site located in Bethesda, MD.

•    Performing animal health surveillance activities as per SOP and as directed by the Facility Veterinarian to ensure the quality of experimental animals within the NICHD Aquatic Program. 
•    Communication with the attending Veterinarian and TPO as needed to obtain prescribed treatments.
•    Maintain lines of communication when carrying out the prescribed treatment plan.
•    Maintain and improve tracking of Animal Health with accurate, thorough and detailed records and spreadsheets in order to identify trends in illnesses and treatments.
•    Take and submit biological samples as needed for diagnosis
•    Maintenance of sterile necropsy instruments packs.
•    Actively involved with the facility Sentinel Health monitoring program.
•    Places requests for health-related supply orders with task management.
o    Coordinates the receipt, stocking, and maintenance of drugs, medicine and veterinary medical supplies inventories.
•    Maintain effective lines of communication with investigator regarding colony and support duties
•    Actively interact with customers as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance when applicable to job description.
•    Track and maintain record of all incoming animal orders and shipments.
•    Receives, examines and properly houses incoming animal shipments.
•    Conduct all in-house water quality tests accurately to provide case information
•    Recognize various parasites, abnormal clinical chemistry values, and abnormal behaviors of animals, correctly notifying the veterinarian immediately
•    Researches, Develops, and Provides environmental enrichment appropriate to the species housed.
•    Provides other minor technical support (e.g. restraining animals, collecting blood, performing injections, and clinical treatments) as directed.
•    Performs animal husbandry and animal care support services (e.g. providing feed, water, clean cages, and daily observations of each animal).
•    Cleans and sanitizes animal rooms and support areas.
•    Disposes of waste and animal carcasses.
•    Utilize database for animal recordkeeping, including but not limited to, animal housing and study support.
•    Assists with development of husbandry protocols as needed.
•    Maintain and record appropriate data for all duties completed.
•    Assist with receiving, stocking and maintenance of all supply inventories.

The following are minimum qualifications related to the Aquatics Specialist III position:

•    Education:  Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences required.
•    Experience: Two years’ experience working with aquatic species required.  
•    Certification/Licensure: AALAS Certification at the LAT level required, LATG certification within six months of eligibility.
