Research Support Specialist- Surgery Technician
- Review, comprehend and comply with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to rodent and rabbit surgery, operation within the vivarium, animal health monitoring, and related tasks.
- Performs in a lead role daily, will be required to train and mentor staff.
- Instruct facility required animal handling and restraint classes for new animal users.
- Assist with teaching the basic rodent surgery training course, using both didactic and hands-on methods.
- Assist with coordinating the logistics for in-house surgery training, to include ensuring appropriate equipment, supplies, and other training materials are on hand and positioned, scheduling of staff for participation in classes, and appropriate documentation of training
Long Description
- Provide rodent surgical support that includes pre-, intra- and post-surgery tasks.
- Assist in scheduling students for outside NIH surgery courses.
- Ensure proper stockage of materials, maintenance scheduling for equipment, sanitization, and related tasks.
- Interface with research staff to assist with logistics and scheduling of projects.
- Perform animal health assessments and carry out veterinary prescribed treatments.
- May be required to perform irradiation, transponder insertion, oral gavage, oral dosing, injections, blood withdrawals, tissue biopsy, identification and necropsies.
Long Description
- Perform routine husbandry duties per managements request.
- Maintain all related logs and spreadsheets for data storage.
- Comply with safety policies, procedures and SDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances.
- Maintain required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed by established deadlines or in the absence of formal deadlines, within a reasonable timeframe.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Research Support Specialist- Surgery Technician
The following are minimum qualifications related to the Research Support Specialist position:
- Education: HS diploma or GED equivalency required. Experience/Certification: 1-year experience with research animals to include training or experience in performing rodent surgical training procedures + LAT certification OR Bachelor of Science in Animal Science or similar + 3 years of experience working with research animals to include training or experience in performing basic rodent surgical training procedures OR 10-13 years of experience working with research animals, to include training or experience in performing basic rodent surgical training procedures.
