Job Summary

We are seeking a Animal Care Technician 1 for our NIA site located in Baltimore MD.

The following are responsibilities related to the Animal Care Technician:

  • Reviews, comprehends and complies with ASP’s, SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to a specific area.
  • May monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations, animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include: perform daily water bottle /automatic water line and cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.
  • May monitor environmental parameters and maintains written records, including room temperatures, light cycles and sanitation.
  • Assists with restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species.
  • Perform euthanasia using correct guidelines.
  • Disposes of animal carcasses following established procedures.
  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures necessary to maintain animal housing areas and isolator environments, including personnel protective equipment use.
  • May be required to receive, inspect and put away incoming animals; ensures and provides for sentinel animals in each rodent housing area.
  • Operates equipment and uses supplies according to safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adheres to safety procedures. Complies with safety policies and procedures and SDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances
  • Maintains required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The following are minimum qualifications related to the Animal Care Technician position:

 High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required with 1 year animal experience or a AS/BS science related degree with no experience.

Achieve Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within one year of eligibility.
