Animal Health Technician / Trainer

  • Performs surgical procedure assistance on facility animals including catheter implants and removals and other procedures as required by investigators under veterinarian direction.  Perform pre and post operative care of animals.  NHP fight wound care and as directed.  Preoperative evaluation to include venipuncture, physical examination, EKG and radiograph.  Prepares surgical supplies in advance.
  • Performs NHP husbandry duties including but not limited to preparation and actual changing of animal cages and related cage accessories, feeding and manual watering or monitoring/ testing automatic watering devices.  Prepares caging for cagewash, including scraping floor grids, breaking down caging and dumping pans or scraping cages.
  • Performs rodent husbandry duties including but not limited to cage change, feed and water change, room and rack sanitation, follow and provide special feed and water requirements per service request.
  • Maintains training ASP and animals listed in training protocol.
  • Conducts rodent animal handling classes to include basic injection techniques.
  • Cleans assigned animal rooms, facility and animal care equipment and associated animal facility areas as assigned
  • Provides backup support in organizing and maintaining surgical, treatment and lab suites.  Sets up equipment, supplies, identifies need for new supplies and contacts vendors.  Conducts regular inventory of veterinary supplies including drugs and expiration dates.  Places orders as necessary to keep areas well stocked.
  • Obtains weekly animal census.
  • Performs euthanasia using correct procedures.
  • Monitors and reports any irregularities in the room temperature, light cycles, air changes, and other environmental conditions that may affect animals.
  • Provides environmental enrichment feed and other enrichment stimuli and/ or provide behavioral assessments.
  • Prepares animals for surgery; induces and monitors anesthesia.
  • Performs daily animal health observations and reports any abnormal conditions or behavior of animals to the Immediate Supervisor, Facility Manager, Veterinary Technician, and/or Clinical Veterinarian.
  • Administers medication and treatments to laboratory animals under the supervision of the veterinarian.
  • Provides services in all aspects of the animal care, clinical, and technical services support contract at the BRC and Triad Building animal facilities.
  • Performs animal health monitoring, sentinel, blood and parasite testing procedures.
  • Assist the veterinarian in preventive procedures such as TB testing, physical and dental examinations of laboratory animals.
  • Documents treatments enters information into medical records under veterinarian direction.
  • Notifies investigators and veterinarian of upcoming surgeries, informs animal care staff of food restrictions. 
  • Maintains cleanliness of all animal surgical treatment and lab facilities to include cleaning
  • Maintains surgery, treatment, diagnostic logbooks, and other required documentation.  Maintains health records including: serology/micro/parasite records.  Maintains and retrieves files and prepares copies. 
  • Monitors and maintains quality control records, cultures and the sentinel program, monitors and maintainsincluding ethylene oxide and autoclave biological samples,
  • Serve as weekend supervisor.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
  • Education:  High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required. 
  • Experience:  One year experience in laboratory animal care with at least one year of technical and laboratory animal surgery experience with rodents and non-human primates preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Certification/Licensure: Must have AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) or higher or achieve ALAT certification within one (1) year in the position.
