 Intern Discovery and Environmental sciences department

Department:
The Discovery & Environmental Sciences department consists of approximately 90 employees. Within this department, research is carried out to investigate the safety of existing and new substances. The work is characterized by a great diversity of tests, test substances, customers, collaborations and innovation.

About our team:
The department consists of four sections: In-vitro and genetic toxicology, in-vitro drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, ecotoxicology, and the innovation team.
The in-vitro sections perform research with primary cells, cell cultures, 3D tissue models or other types of test systems, and investigate effect of substances (drugs, pesticides, chemicals) on genetic toxicity endpoints like mutations or chromosome damage, endocrine disruption properties, skin and eye toxicity or other types of toxicity. Also, absorption, binding and metabolism of substances is investigated. Several different techniques are used, such as cell culturing, flow cytometry, high-content analysis, PCR and analytical techniques like HPLC, LC-MS, luminescence or fluorescence.
The ecotoxicology group investigates effects of substances on the aqueous environment by performing studies with algae, daphnia, midge, fish, and amphibians.

Internship project: Development of Oligonucleotide Analysis using Mass Spectrometry

We are seeking a student experienced in mass spectrometry, preferably high-resolution mass spectrometry, to contribute to the advancement of oligonucleotide analysis across various biological matrices. This includes liver cells, different cell fractions, and plasma. The project involves comparing several sample preparation methods, mass spectrometry/HPLC methods, and data analysis approaches. You will start with commercial standards. After a mass spectrometry/HPLC method has been developed, pilots with biological matrices can be initiated. Initial method development has already been conducted, which can serve as a foundation for further exploration. You will have access to state-of-the-art equipment such as a new Orbitrap Exploris 480. You will also work closely together with other lab technicians to ensure the methods are within industry standards.
You will be working at the in vitro ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) group. Our group specialized in profiling the metabolism of small and large molecules in several matrices. We furthermore continuously develop methods and strategies to analyse novel molecules.

What is required?

•    Third year Bachelor HBO or Master student in analytical chemistry;
•    You are enthusiastic about analytical characterization techniques;
•    You are trained to work safely and effectively in a laboratory environment;
•    You have experience with HPLC analysis and knowledge about high-resolution mass spectrometry;
•    Proactive teamplayer, strong analytical skills, capable of critically evaluating data;
•    You are searching for an internship where you have the freedom to take initiative;
•    You are available for a period of at least 4 – 6 months for 5 days a week.

Selection procedure:
•    After receiving your application, we need some time to review. After the review we will inform you if you will be invited for an interview.
•    During the interview we will discuss the subject of the internship.
•    If the internship is assigned to you, our HR colleagues will take care of your internship agreement.

Our offer to you:

Interning at Charles River means working in state-of-the-art laboratory. On-the-job training under the guidance of a senior analyst and the opportunity to develop and grow in your field.

•    The chance to gain experience in your field of study;
•    An opportunity to maximize your potential and possibilities for your first job after graduation;
•    Monthly internship allowance.
